| YouTube Cannes Young Lions 2009 |
[Jun. 15th, 2009|07:19 pm] |
It's probably obvious by now by the lack of general WOOYAYOMG!! and the passing of the deadline, but we weren't shortlisted and consequently didn't win this year's YouTube Cannes Young Lions competition.
Now, I never had any expectations of winning, as it struck both Tom and me when finishing the video that, whilst the central creative concept was sound, it lacked that viral quality that judges of a YouTube-specific competition would no doubt be looking for. Sliight oversight there on the brief, perhaps, but what mattered more to us was the overriding feeling that we created something we genuinely thought was good, and that we felt proud of.
So, not winning was not really much of a disappointment. Not making the shortlist was a little, considering that nearly 700 videos were submitted and we felt that ours was definitely better than the majority. However, I quickly got over it. Onwards and upwards, etc.
That is until today, when I noticed that the shortlist of 35 videos has now been made public, and that THIS video made it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVN4bHDx9MY
What the fuck. And it was uploaded after ours as well! Now whilst possible, I doubt very much that he/she saw our video, copied the idea and made their take in the space of 4 hours or however long the time-gap was, but I saw this and one other video that used the lifeline concept, 3 out of 700, but how, HOW is this shortlist-worthy and not ours?
It makes me want to cry, just a little bit, knowing that we were actually much closer than we thought, but really really not.
Arrrrrgh.

Anyway. Venting over. Now time to eat. |

LiveJournal, my old friend. Thought I'd make a post cos I actually have something to report on!
So I spent the best part of my weekend co-creating an advert for the YouTube Cannes Young Lions 48 Hour Ad Contest: http://www.youtube.com/canneslions
All entrants had 48 hours to complete an ad to the brief which was released on midnight on Friday. The topic is action for climate change, and the charity is Oxfam.
It's been fun and I'm quite pleased with how our ad turned out. Slightly worried now, though, that it may be too wordy and not visually interesting or 'sexy' enough or but I'm happy with the simplicity of the central concept. I think it just about works! You can check it out below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X32aC-twZM4
I'd really appreciate your views and comments. :)
In addition, the good news is that the video has now been approved so please vote for us here: http://www.youtube.com/canneslions
You can find the ad by searching for 'oxfam advert' - the screengrab is a white screen with a line of text in the centre.
Woo! |

Just one quick comment: the music for this was outstanding. I think one of the things I'll miss the most is Bear McCreary!

So last night in street I got completely trounced by George Sampson (yes that George Sampson) :P
It was my and Em's first foray to Husky's which is basically proper grass-roots and is so street none of the classes seem to be advertised anywhere!
We went to this guy's open class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-hU_u1WhqE
And bloody hell it was hard. I felt like a real pleb at the back. I could do all the individual moves fine, and even in sequence sometimes, but just not in time cos it was *really* fast. Still, gotta love a challenge. The worst bit though was at the end when we were split into groups and FILMED. I had a complete freak out brain freeze and just messed up the whole thing, so I looked even more stupid and noob-like than ever. Oh well. Never mind.
Anyway, I got to bask in the glory of George, which was worth the self-humiliation! :P

| [ | mood |
| | cheerful | ] | Tonight it was Secret Santa after work, and I received one of the best presents in recent memory. It was a little gift bag with my name on it and inside on the top was a piece of paper which said: "READ REVERSE BEFORE LOOKING AT CONTENTS OF BAG". On the reverse, decorated with holly: "WORKING LATE SURVIVAL KIT".
Inside: -can of Red Bull -Mars bar -mini deoderant -packet of Smints -eye drops -3 minute miracle frizz remedy -pocket-size tin of cream with a label on it that says: "GRINDSTONE PROTECTION CREAM - APPLY TO NOSE AS REQUIRED" -little bottle of 'mulled wine' oil labelled: "MIDNIGHT OIL - EMERGENCY SUPPLY" -two matches, tied together with a bow -little glittery silver stars for effect
Awesome. And it was from one of the directors too! |

So today's "Christmas shopping" did not quite go to plan (ahem), but I did indulge myself with two pairs of killer heels from Kurt Geiger. It's not often I find one pair of shoes I like and that actually fit, let alone two. And they were on sale. And it's Christmas. That's how I justify it to myself anyway. :P Also, they're uber sexy. Mmm, shoes... |

Gosh, it's been a while, eh? Well, since I'm in no mood for constructing full sentences, here be a list or two instead.
Things that are good: -Hamlet at the Novello theatre (awesome!!!) -Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's theatre -my mum's lamb biryani -impromptu weekends away -Belgian chips and mayonnaise and raspberry beer -watching good friends getting married -steak (all kinds) at The Rotisserie restaurant in Whetstone -cocktails at The Soho Hotel -3 for 2 at Borders plus 25% off voucher (mmm) -warm bed -sleep
Things that are not so good: -working late at the office -the weather -flu, helped in no way by above -losing my voice, although this admittedly does add a certain comedy element to all my conversations
I think I'm busy every night this week. Eep! But I guess that's the run up to Christmas for you. I wish I had some time I could really set aside for Christmas shopping. I'd resolved not to do the whole present thing this year but then I remembered I actually quite enjoy buying people things. Hm. |

| [ | mood |
| | good | ] | Well tonight I joined a gym once more, even though I swore to myself I would never go there ever again. But it's great because: (a) it's about half the price rejoining a Virgin Active would've been (b) it's under ten minutes walk from the flat (c) they have two power plate machines which i'm quite excited to try (d) they do street AND argentine tango classes, as well as pole dancing, burlesque pole dancing, belly dancing and other more standard fare like legs bums and tums and pilates (e) tonight's street class was the closest i've come since moving here to anything as good as sunshine. in fact, we probably learnt about three times as much routine in the hour, which was awesome. and it was a pound cheaper...! (f) classes (excluding courses) are free for members
So I'm quite chuffed. It's like my perfect gym. It's small, the people are friendly, there's the usual gym equipment, though in small amounts, but also a bunch of dance studios. Yay!
Knackered now though. And slightly cacking my pants cos tomorrow morning I have to run an external client meeting at Pfizer and I only found out about it this morning. ARGH.

Last night I had the grave misfortune of watching the pilot of Lipstick Jungle, an adaptation of a Candace Bushnell novel (she of Sex and the City fame) and oh my dear lord it's quite possibly the worst thing I have ever seen. It's horrendously cliche-ridden, hamfisted, soulless, and so poorly written it made me want to stab at my own face with chop sticks. Anything which features one of the main characters receiving a text, post personal work victory, from her husband of 15 years which reads "I wnt divorce" (yes, that's what it said, the camera focussed right in on it) deserves to have putrifying, rancid tomatoes thrown right at it. Don't even get me started on the perky fashion designer who, after her new millionaire boyfriend flies her back from a disastrous business meeting in Japan on his private jet, sniffles through her tears "I don't like being rescued! But I did really like riding in that plane." And then they kiss. *vomits*
Don't waste an hour of your life on it. It's like poo on the heel of Sex and the City's Malono Blahniks and ought be avoided at all costs.
In other news, my new favourite place in London is Cha Cha Moon on Carnaby Street, a Wagamama style Chinese food eaterie where everything on the menu is £3.50(!) and you can have the most delicious non alcoholic smoothies ever. I had garlic choi sum (crunchy green veg), roast duck noodle soup and this awesome carrot, orange, ginger drink thing all for under a tenner! Aw man it was delicious.
I also went to Imperial China in China Town on Saturday for some dim sum, mmmm. It's cool in there, you have to cross over a little tropical bridge before you get to the restaurant proper. Ooh and I tried some mango pudding which came in the shape of a fish, it was yummy. I'm so happy now that I have some cheap and tasty Chinese places to go to! My entire London experience has suddenly been hugely enriched :P |
